Will Guidara chats on the Splendid Table about the Secrets of Service and I thought it was too good not to share. The podcast reminded me of a phrase that some of my colleagues and friends from India mentioned in passings -- called Atithi Devo Bhava which roughly translates to "The Guest is God -- making those who are traveling to you feel welcome.
Reflecting on this more -- clients that come to us for help on digital projects should also feel welcome. When they come to us for help they are figuratively stepping into "our house" and we should do all that we can to make them feel welcome.
I recently assisted a client is launching a new website for her photography business. Sitting with her and brainstorming all of the values that were important to her and her business and condensing them into a single website.
Our clients don't really know what is possible, and a way to show great hospitality is to delight them with new experiences.
I knew my client was extremely proud of her studio, so before one of our meetings -- I surprised her with a 360 degree camera. My goal was to capture a virtual walkthrough of her studio and host it on Google Maps. It wasn't the most technically impressive thing I could have done, but it was a pleasant surprise!
We spent about an hour getting the studio ready for the photoshoot, but it was probably one of the most fun parts of the entire project. Christi told me the stories behind all of the photos and outfits on the walls and it was a delightful experience.
This brings me to Will Guidara’s quote - providing hospitality is an extremely rewarding experience. Serving individuals and having a connection that allows a true and genuine connection to form that allows me to really get down and dirty with what they are passionate about.
